Field notes

Observed closely, for science.

01 · Habitat
Warm still water, 36 to 38 degrees. Rarely seen in the wild; common on bath edges.
02 · Behaviour
Turns to face nothing in particular. Drifts away from any disturbance, then slowly back to the middle.
03 · Call
A single squeak, produced only when squeezed. Silent when floating.
04 · Field marks
Orange bill, painted eyes, a seam you can feel under the tail where the two halves meet.

Care

Four steps after every bath.

Bath toys hold water. These four steps keep the inside dry.

  1. Rinse

Run it under clean water after every bath.

  2. Squeeze out

Hold it nose-down and press until no water comes out of the base.

  3. Dry upside down

On a rack or a towel, base up, overnight.

  4. Retire gracefully

If the paint chips, it becomes a shelf duck.
